There are basically 4 levels or states of mind, namely:-
Beta - This is the conscious state of mind or more commonly known as the wakeful state, the state we are in when we are awake like when sitting, walking, running etc. There is little fluctuation of energy.
Alpha - This is somewhere in-between the conscious and subconscious states. You experience this everyday, for instance when you are about to drift into sleep or when you just open your eyes early in the morning. There is a higher fluctuation of energy here.
Theta - Initial stage of sleep.
Delta - Deep sleep.
